Alcatel to sell first Android phone in CPW

Alcatel OT980 to go on sale at The Carphone Warehouse for under £100 on prepay from next month

Alcatel is to enter the smartphone market with the launch of the OT-980, it’s first Android-based device. It will go on sale through Carphone Warehouse from next month and will cost £99.95 on prepay.

The handset is based on the Android 2.1 Eclair operating system and comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The 2.8-touchscreen has a virtual QWERTY keyboard with touch and slide access to everything on the menu.

Other features of note include a two-megapixel camera, social networking capabilities and MP3 player.

Alcatel UK and Ireland country director William Patterson said: “We position our product to bring aspirational feature sets and design to new price points. We have always done prepay and think there is an opportunity to change with the Android.”
