Three set to offer 4G ‘as standard’ on priceplans

Customers with ‘ultrafast’ handsets will initially get a faster version of 3G and, eventually, LTE for no extra cost

Three has announced it is to offer its 4G service to existing customers for no extra charge when it launches later in the year.

Its ‘ultrafast’ offering will initially run as DC-HSDPA, a faster version of 3G, until Three is ready to launch its 4G service.

Ultrafast is currently available to 55 per cent of the UK’s population with the network pledging to cover 80 per cent by March. To receive the faster data speeds customers will need an ‘ultrafast ready’ device, currently the iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 920 and the newest range of iPads.

In the next month Three will also begin selling the LTE-ready Samsung Galaxy SIII, Galaxy Note II and BlackBerry Z10. When the Sony Xperia Z is launched it will also be added to the list of compatible devices.

Three UK CEO Dave Dyson said: “As we add the next wave of technology to our ultrafast network, we’ve listened to our customers and thought long and hard about the right way to do it. We don’t want to limit ultrafast services to a select few based on a premium price and we’ve decided our customers will get this service as standard.”
