BEL: Belgacom complaints from rivals

Belgian mobile phone operators BASE and Mobistar have filed a complaint with European antitrust regulators alleging that rival Belgacom has abused its dominant position in its home market.

The joint complaint, which was filed in April but not previously publicly revealed, argued that incumbent Belgacom abuses its position in the Belgium broadband market.

Mobistar, owned by France Telecom and Belgium’s second biggest mobile network, said that although Belgacom had offered it access to its high speed internet networks, the market did not allow for sufficient competition in terms of pricing.

BASE, owned by Dutch operator KPN, is Belgium’s third and smallest mobile operator.

Belgacom said there was no grounds for the complaint as its prices were approved by the country’s telecoms regulator.
