Kodak sues Samsung and LG

November 19, 2008

Kodak files against Samsung and LG for using Kodak patents in cameraphones

Kodak has filed complaints against Samsung and LG Electronics for infringement of its patents for technology used in their camera phones.

Patents covering image capture, compression and data storage, as well as a method for previewing motion images are all under question in the disagreement.

“Kodak has a long history of innovation and we have invested many millions of dollars developing our digital camera technology,” said Kodak chief intellectual property officer Laura Quatela.

“We’ve held discussions with both companies in an attempt to resolve this issue and have not been able to reach a satisfactory agreement. Consequently, we must take this legal action in order to ensure that we protect the interests of our shareholders and existing licensees of Kodak digital camera patents.”

The complaint was filed in the United States District Court and Kodak is seeking undisclosed compensation for damages as a result of the infringement as well as injunctions to stop Samsung and LG from further importation and sale of the products cited in the complaints.

Kodak has licensed its imaging patents to a range of companies including Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson.
